Shorting China, FXP Update

Earlier this month we shorted Chinese stocks via FXP, "The ProShares UltraShort FTSE China 50 ETF [which] provides -2x exposure to a free-float-weighted index comprising 50 of the largest and most liquid Chinese stocks listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange."

Here's an update on the FXP chart:

Having paid $30.15 for FXP, we're already up 5.5% on this position.

We're now instituting a stop level of $28.40 on FXP.

Coffee Update, JO

This post dated September 28 recaps our bullish calls on coffee this year.

We remain long JO, the iPath Bloomberg Coffee Subindex Total Return ETN which we entered at $18.91

JO is up 30% in the year since then, having closed last week at a 17-month high of $24.52, and we're finally instituting a stop to protect some of those gains.

We'll sell JO should it close below $21.20

Gold, YCS Updates

On October 1st we warned that gold was due to fall, and it lost over 5% by the following week.

On October 6th we predicted that gold was due to bounce, and it hit its low for the month the next day.  It has since rallied almost 3.5% from that low.

The bounce may continue awhile, however we've no reason to turn long-term bullish at this time.

On September 22nd, we made the case for selling short the Japanese yen via YCS.

Yesterday YCS hit its high since then, up 9% from our entry level.

We're raising our stop by another $1, now to $60.90

HXD Update

In early October, we made the case for HXD.

The position was triggered the next day, and we were stopped out for a loss of 3.75% two weeks later.

The chart of the TSX we'd posted still stands, as does its implications.

Here it is again:

We're going re-enter HXD if it trades above $7.80

Should it trigger we'll place our stop at $7.40, pending future updates, in an attempt to limit risk to roughly 5%.

Please see the original post for more on HXD and our rationale for taking this position.

Coincidental Lines

Another major index, this time the Russell 2000 small-caps, breaks its 2016 uptrend:

The red line in these charts shows areas of obvious historical support & resistance.

Here's the S&P500, looking like it'll soon break down further:

So too the DJIA, with the green line suggesting the minimum level required to turn bullish though we'd prefer to see at least 18500 before even considering it :

And the NASDAQ:

It's a curious coincidence that all of these Indexes are trading apparently in tandem and looking ready to tumble.  Or is it?

Castles made of sand fall into the sea, eventually.

We'll update recent positions over the weekend.

UCO Stop Increase

This is an update to our post of October 02.

UCO is now up over 24% from our entry a month ago, after hitting a high of +30% last week.

Our stated stop level for the position is that we'd intended to sell if Crude Oil WTI traded below $42.

We now revise that condition to if Crude Oil WTI trades below $45.

If you're more conservative, you may consider a stop based on Crude WTI below $49.50

Holding WEAT

WEAT is the Teucrium Wheat Fund which "tracks an index of wheat futures contracts. It includes the second and third contracts to expire, as well as the contract expiring in the December following the third contract."

Here's its chart:

As we see it, two down trends are bullishly broken (black and green lines) while there's well-established support (red line).

We bought WEAT today at $7.32 and hope to hold it for very long-term gains since commodities tend to move in major swings lasting months or even years.

We've set a stop-loss level at $6.80 in case it goes against us and drops below the recent support level.

DJIA Uptrend Broken, Holding SDOW & VXX, QID Entered

Two weeks ago we warned a break of the DJIA's uptrend seemed imminent

Here's an updated chart showing the expected break occurred today, with the DJIA closing below that uptrend line for the first time this year:

A close below 18100, and especially 18000, would be extremely bearish for stocks, however the picture already seems grim.

In order to effectively short the general market, we hold SDOW and VXX as detailed in past postings.

Our stop on SDOW remains $12.70 and we're initiating a stop level for VXX of $31.90

Our buy-stop on QID was hit today at $24.70

Our stop loss on QID will be on a close below $22.60 in an attempt to limit risk to roughly 8.5% from our entry level.

Never over-commit to such holdings.  Never over-commit to any holding; long, short, levered or not!

Buying the British Pound Sterling via FXB

Lately Great Britain's currency has been in a virtual free-fall, making headlines while traders sell in a panic.

Here's the chart:

FXB is "the CurrencyShares British Pound Sterling Trust [which] delivers exposure to changes in value of the British pound relative to the US dollar."

Today we speculated long the pound via FXB at $119.10

This is highly speculative so we're allowing an unusual amount of leeway, planning to stop out at a loss if it trades below $99.

Shorting China via FXP

Below is a chart of FXP, "The ProShares UltraShort FTSE China 50 ETF [which] provides -2x exposure to a free-float-weighted index comprising 50 of the largest and most liquid Chinese stocks listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange."

The downtrend, in green, seems broken.

Today we bought FXP at $30.15

We've no stop in mind for the time being.

Buying More SJB and TBT, Junk Bonds Charts Updated

This post is an update to our posting of a few weeks ago on TBT and SJB.

Here's an updated chart for JNK, which represents junk bonds, showing a broken uptrend as well as overhead trend resistance:

Next is the chart of SJB, which is our vehicle for shorting junk bonds, showing a downtrend broken with trend support immediately below:

SJB closed today at $24.98 and we're doubling our position.

The chart for TBT, a vehicle for shorting 20+ year treasuries, also shows a broken downtrend:

TBT closed today at $33.68 and we're doubling that position too.

As stated a few weeks ago we have no stop levels in mind as of yet, and we'd be more likely to again add to our positions rather than sell at a loss if SJB or TBT drop materially.

COF, Gold, UCO, YCS Updates

In late September we shorted Capital One (COF).  Our stated stop level was hit earlier this week, causing a small loss of 1.5%

We had stated that we'd consider going long if the stock was trading above $73, however we've chosen to stay away from it for now.

Last weekend we posted a chart showing that gold had broken a long uptrend and was likely to drop.

Gold fell hard the next day, and has dropped 5% ($66) to today's low.

Gold is now due to bounce, although we believe it'll go lower in due time.

Last weekend we also posted our belief that oil would rally to "at least near the $50 in the near term".

Oil hit $50 today, and our UCO position is up over 26% at today's close since our entry just two weeks ago.

We'll sell half the UCO position tomorrow.  On the remainder we'll leave our stop in place, intending to close out if oil drops below $42.

Our YCS position, to effectively short the Japanese yen, is also up nicely since our recent entry.  We'll raise our stop level by $1 to $59.90

Trouble Up North? Shorting the TSX

The TSX, Toronto Stock Exchange, is Canada's senior stock market.

Here's a detailed look at its long-term chart:

The black lines show a downtrend of resistance immediately above its current levels, and an uptrend stretching back to early this year probably already broken.

Of greatest interest is the momentum at the bottom.  The red arrows call attention to what happened the last three times when there was a cross in the MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence) similar to the one that's happening now (red circle at lower right).

Such indicators are never fool-proof, of course, as evidenced by the green circle at lower left showing a time there was a breakdown in the MACD but the market didn't drop.

With global stock markets quite possibly on the edge of a protracted slide, and so too gold which would weigh heavily on Canada's resource-heavy market, we're expecting the next big move in the TSX will be downward.

Below is the chart for HXD, Horizons BetaPro S&P/TSX 60™ Bear+ ETF which "seeks daily investment results, before fees, expenses, distributions, brokerage commissions and other transaction costs, that endeavour to correspond to two times (200%) the inverse (opposite) of the daily performance of the S&P/TSX 60™ Index. The Index represents the large cap universe for Canada by offering exposure to 60 of the largest companies on the Toronto Stock Exchange."

The HXD chart shows a year-long declining wedge pattern that looks about to be broken to the upside.

HXD trades in Canada, and if it hits $8.00 we'll buy it.

We'd then close out of the position if it trades below $7.70 pending further updates.

Chart Updates - Gold and Japanese yen (YCS)

We posted gold charts and commentary just a couple of days ago, however here's an updated look:

Uptrend looks broken, with perhaps a shelf of support (red line) in effect.

Below that red line, and certainly below $1300, the extreme imbalance in COT (Commitment of Traders, at bottom of chart) would probably unwind rapidly, in which case the price of gold would drop precipitously.

We commented on, and shorted via YCS, the Japanese yen nearly two weeks ago.

YCS is "the ProShares UltraShort Yen ETF [which] provides a 2x inverse multiple to the daily performance of the yen spot price against the US dollar as measured by Reuters."

In the charts below we see YCS on the verge of breaking a year-long downtrend, and it seems that the yen itself may have already broken its corresponding uptrend.

Our stop-loss level on YCS remains at $58.90

Oil and UCO Update

In mid-January of this year we were very bullish on oil while the world was ultra-bearish.

We bought UCO, a levered long play on oil, and by early June it was up almost 120%.  We'd been raising our stop level regularly, and did so again that day.

The next day UCO hit its 2016 high, and our stop was hit a few days later for a gain of 104% in four and a half months.  Two months later, it had dropped 46% from its high of the year.

As can be seen via the links above, on another oil play this year, OKS, we scored 75% including dividends in 4 and a half months.  We've scored big on ETP, WPZ and NS too, which we still hold while enjoying significant dividend payments.

In September we announced that we were buying oil again, via UCO.  It's already up 13% from our entry and today we present revised oil charts.

In this close-up look, we see a nearly 4-month downtrend broken with a longer downtrend not far above:

Currently oil is at $48.05 and we believe it'll rise to at least near the $50 level in the near term.

Greater potential exists however, as we illustrate on the long-term chart below:

Here we see a massive falling wedge pattern broken this year, and resistance levels around $60 and $78

It's normal for a break in this type of wedge pattern to result in at least a 50% retracement, which suggests the price would top out in the high $70 range.

If we're lucky enough to even see oil rise to near $60 while we still hold UCO, we'd be utilizing a tight stop at that point to protect what should be very sizeable gains by then.

For now we're raising our effective stop on UCO, intending to close the position should Crude Oil WTI trade below $42
